Mental illness is on the rise worldwide and has affected the lives of millions of people of all ages. Since the first early diagnoses, many types of mental illnesses have been defined that were previously unknown. Bipolar disorder is such an illness, and it is one that Dana Wall knows well. As a hyperactive “busy” kid with undiagnosed ADHD and an overabundance of energy, Dana’s life was good and filled with fun. But as time passed, Dana found himself struggling with bouts of mania, depression, and mixed bipolar episodes, all of which nearly destroyed him and the successful life he’d built. But with the guidance and support of excellent health professionals, not to mention a good head on his own shoulders, Dana was able to take control of what is a very misunderstood illness. “The Busy Kid” is one man’s story of the challenges and triumphs from a life lived with bipolar disorder, and proof that even with mental illness, people can live happy, meaningful lives.... Truck Driver Bingo (live music)

Aug 13, 7:00pm - Aug 13, 9:00pm

The Book Nook & Java Shop8744 Ferry StMontague, MI49437 Map

Truck Driver Bingo is a guitar/bass/ drums power trio that plays raw blues and out jazz. While our primary motivation for making this music is to get people to listen, it’s not unusual for them to get up and dance as well. The band consists of Jim Nichols on bass; Hank Cupp on drums; and Frank Galante on vocals and guitar. All three band members are seasoned musicians and are committed to musical excellence and a polished performance. We like making people happy!
Just who are the guys in Truck Driver Bingo?
Hank Cupp has been a drummer since his early teens, through college, and all his adult life. There have been many genres, including Jazz, Big Bands, Blues, Rock and Roll and even Concert and Theater Orchestras. “I just love making music with other people. It feeds my soul. There is nothing like the feeling of being part of a musical ensemble.”
Frank Galante has been singing and playing guitar practically all his life (which means for more decades than he cares to admit). He started his musical journey as a regular player at many of the most happening clubs in New York City and has since performed everywhere from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean, to Amsterdam. When not playing the blues or jazzing out, he performs on classical guitar, lute and Baroque guitar, having studied with some of the world’s most noted performers and teachers. As he says: "Music is my reason for being".
Jim Nichols, a lifelong resident of west Michigan, has played bass in several local bands through the years, including the Nite Crawlers, Redeye, the Blue Rooster Band and most recently Bad Manners. He enjoys listening to almost any kind of music, as long as it is well done. He has found playing with Truck Driver Bingo a challenging and satisfying experience; his decades of playing rock standards bringing an essential element of groove to the band’s sound. Jim is a true lover of music.
That’s it. Three old guys…still at it. In performance, the band is super tight and operates at an energy level that belies our age. We push out some smokin’ Blues and test the edges of jazz fusion and improvised music. It makes for a dynamic mix in live performance. We have been a regular fixture at the Gull Landing in Pentwater, two years running, and garnered rave reviews after playing Ludrock 2019. It’s time to branch out. You hire us. We’ll get your crowd moving.

Aug 22, 4:00pm - Aug 22, 5:00pm

The Book Nook & Java Shop8744 Ferry StMontague, MI49437 Map

Along the shores of Lake Michigan in the small town of Charlevoix sit unique mushroom-like homes created by architect Earl A. Young. Seeing nature and home in this playful tumble of bumpy stone walls and wavy roofs fills the soul with delight. When Alice B. McGinty—author of nearly 50 books—saw these homes in 2017, she knew she needed to write about them.

“Seeing the playful, whimsical mushroom houses of Charlevoix for the first time touched the child in me,” said McGinty. “There’s magic in the way those homes made me feel! I felt Earl Young's passion for creating homes as if Nature had built them herself. I wanted to investigate and capture his creative spirit in the way I best know how—by writing a book.”

The result is the award-winning author’s most recent release for young readers, Mushroom House Man: The Story of Earl Young and His Cottages of Stone.

In Mushroom House Man, young readers can discover the true story of Earl Young through McGinty’s writing and Sharon Smithem’s illustrations. With nature as his teacher and an unstoppable creative spirit, Earl Young transformed the boulders from Lake Michigan’s northern shores into Charlevoix’s fairytale cottages, which are now known and beloved worldwide.

McGinty—whose children’s books include several involving the histories of fascinating characters including Darwin, Venetia Burney, and Gandhi—possesses a passion for sharing such stories with young readers.

“I enjoy writing biographies because I love finding the story in a life,” said McGinty. “I go about discovering who a person is, deep down, and what drove them to accomplish what they did. And once I’ve found that gem, I polish it ’til it shines! I believe reading biographies is very important for kids because they can be inspired when they read about someone who began life with an interest that might be similar to their own, and then see the persistence and passion it took to pursue it. Reading picture book biographies is a way to make the lives and accomplishments of many diverse people accessible to young people. Young readers get the chance to make new friends from throughout history!”

While Mushroom House Man is characterized as a children’s book, McGinty considered an older audience as well while writing.

“Earl Young’s homes bring out the child in all of us, no matter how old we are! I definitely wrote the book with two audiences in mind—first were the children because I wanted to make Earl’s story accessible to them. Next, were people of any age who are fascinated with Young’s homes. I wanted to capture that gem of Earl A. Young’s creative spirit and convey it using as few words as possible and in a way which is engaging, informative, and inspiring for people of all ages.”

While words have the power to effectively convey a story that readers can visualize in their minds, illustrations truly bring the images to life. McGinty was fortunate to find the right Illustrator for her project.

“I found Sharon Smithem completely by accident, but I believe she was the perfect illustrator for this book,” McGinty said. “Her artwork makes the book come to life in just the right ways—from the historical time period to the natural creative spirit to the whimsicality of Earl Young and his homes. The illustrations truly are stunning!”

Mushroom House Man: The Story of Earl A. Young and His Cottages of Stone is published by Mission Point Press of Traverse City, Michigan.

The Book Nook & Java Shop8744 Ferry StMontague, MI49437 Map

Grand-Rapids based Silverstiles is guitarist John Bruni and bassist Keith Jaissle, who share a love of classic country jukebox hits like “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” and “Hey Good Lookin’.” These songs inspire Bruni’s colorful tales about rogues and misfits—that border on absurdist humor—all anchored by Jaissle’s painterly bass lines.

Honing their original material by playing shows in Grand Rapids, they recorded A Long Time to Be Gone (2016) at Goon Lagoon, the only analog studio in the Grand-Rapids area. They followed up in the studio with Slow to Burn (2019), making for an emotionally-direct listening experience. Bruni and Jaissle have honed their country/roots-rock sound, which you can hear on the band’s website [www.silverstiles.com].

Silverstiles’ performances have an intimacy that draws people into the stories they tell, some borrowed and some new, from the past and present. Influenced by Neil Young, the Byrds, and Kris Kristofferson, they harken to these golden sounds night after night.

Silverstiles
