Jazz Showcase: ME3
ME3 is a trio of improvisers based in the Detroit area. This ensemble explores compositions and soundscapes written by Marcus Elliot. ME3 draws their influences from African-American music and from the western classical tradition.
Marcus Elliot is a saxophonist, composer, improvisor, and educator based in Detroit, Michigan. His compositions and improvisations has been described by the New York Times as “convincing and confident, evolved in touch and tone…”, and the Detroit Free Press has said “Marcus Elliot represents next generation of jazz”. Elliot leads and coleads many different Detroit based bands including the Marcus Elliot Quartet, Clockwork, Balance, Beyond Rebellious, and Lanula. He is a Fellow of the Geri Allen Gathering Orchestra. He co-founded the nonprofit Polyfold Musical Arts Collective. Elliot is the director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Jazz Ensembles.
Kayvon Gordon (drums) was born and raised in Detroit. At a young age, he was taken under the mentorship of legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Gordon has had the honor of sharing the stage with Marcus Belgrave, Joe Lovano, Andrew Bishop, Johnny
O’Neal, Robert Hurst, Rodney Whitaker and many veteran Detroit musicians.
Brian Juarez is a jazz bassist from Berkeley, CA. He is currently in attendance at the University of Michigan, where he studies privately with Grammy Award winning bassist, Robert Hurst III. Brian has studied with jazz luminaries such as Bennie Maupin, Marcus
Belgrave, Ndugu Chancler, Benny Green, Patrice Rushen, and Rodney Whitaker, and has performed extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and the Metro Detroit Area. He aspires to someday provide disadvantaged youth with the means of attaining a quality music education.
