Michigan author Brenda Humphey Meisels will be discussing and signing her book: Family at Booknook. This will also be the book club meeting for the month.
A traumatized teenage mother, a cantankerous older man and a precocious child create an unlikely family.
Sixteen-year-old Sparrow is pregnant. Banished from her home, she is
deposited at Dave Stanley’s bookshop. Withdrawn and seemingly unaware
of her pregnancy, Sparrow remains and works at Booknook. With the birth
of her daughter, Finch, she awakens and is determined to keep her baby.
Dave becomes a surrogate grandfather, protector of mother and daughter.
Longing for her mysterious, absent father who, she mistakenly believes
can complete her family; Finch grows up feeling the sting of being
illegitimate. This is a story of relationships and of hope, in which a
reclusive single mother and a feisty girl come of age.
Ms. Meisels Writes:
As a psychotherapist I have heard many personal narratives and have
been privileged to play a part in helping people like Sparrow. I wanted
to show authentic characters that make mistakes, hurt and bleed but
learn to trust, love and find resolution. The novel is set in Michigan:
Milan, Adrian, Clinton, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, places I am familiar
with and fond of. I’m excited to meet and talk with people about the
novel and the process of writing and publishing.

About the Author:
The pseudonym and web site names have no real significance other
than I like them. My given name is Billy Duane Page. I have gone by
Bill D. or B. D. most of my life. In my youth I was known as William
until I had to get a birth certificate for the WW II draft and found
that what I thought was my given name was not. Surprise!
I have been a teacher at all levels of public education from
elementary through graduate school in Manson and Marion, Iowa, Lincoln
Park, Michigan and adjunct professor for Western Michigan University. I
was an elementary and special education school principal in Rockford,
IL; assistant superintendent to the Illinois State Superintendent of
Education, in Springfield; superintendent of schools in Whitehall, MI;
and Muskegon Community College dean of students. In addition to my
education career, I am a WW II veteran and have been a Boy and Cub
Scout Master, a trapper, carpenter, cabinet maker, sheet metal worker,
draftsman, railroad section hand, and highway worker. Those varied
experiences have given me a unique insight into human behavior.
Because of that insight, I have developed empathy for people from
all walks of life. Working with people across the entire span of our
social matrix has let me see the yin and the yang of it, the good and
the bad. Prejudice more often shows its ugly head as a downward
phenomenon. Those who ‘have’ are more inclined to look upon those who
‘have not’ with less favor. That is part of the reason I write for
children. I have devoted my life to the improvement of life for all
children, especially the disadvantaged It is my guiding principal.
My wife of sixty–two years and I live in Muskegon, Michigan. We have
three children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Our
childhood home was Marion, Iowa.
